Day 1: Auckland - Waipoua Forest - Omapere

Gannets at the Muriway Colony, West Auckland

Our first stop is Muriwai Beach to visit the gannet colony nesting on a headland. We continue up the West Coast and lunch in Matakohe where we visit the amazing Matakohe Kauri Museum. North of Dargaville we enter the beautiful Waipoua Forest guarded over by Tane Mahuta, the God of the Forest and the largest kauri. Tane Mahuta is just a short, flat walk through beautiful native bush.

We continue around the southern shores of the Hokianga to the small village of Omapere. Our hotel is on the water’s edge with wonderful views across to the golden sand dunes. Take a walk on the beach before we dine in at the hotel this evening.

Day 2: Omapere - Rawene - Mangonui - Taipa

Hokianga Wharf - Northland Summertime Tour

We catch the ferry across the Hokianga Harbour from pretty Rawene to Kohukohu and drive to Mangamuka and on to Mangonui for lunch.

Explore nearby Karakare Peninsula and stay two nights at Ramada Resort Reia, Taipa Beach.

Day 3: Taipa - Cape Reinga - Ninety Mile Beach - Taipa

Lighthouse and ocean views at Cape Reinga

We take an excursion to the iconic lighthouse at Cape Reinga where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet.

In a custom–built coach we drive down Te Paki Stream and along the sands of 90 Mile Beach returning to Taipa for the evening.

Day 4: Taipa - Kerikeri - Te Waimate Mission - Waitangi

Waitangi Treaty House - Northland Summertime Tour

On the historic trail today we visit Kerikeri’s Stone Store and Kemp House built in 1822 followed by charming Te Waimate Mission House and Waitangi Treaty House and museum.

Stay two nights in waterview rooms at Copthorne Waitangi.

Day 5: Bay of Islands Cruise - Russell - Waitangi

Hole in the Rock Cruise in the Bay of Islands

Enjoy a scenic dolphin-watching cruise on the Bay this morning. Step on board at Paihia to cruise out through the islands and golden sand beaches to Cape Brett and the famous Hole in the Rock.  Disembark at Russell to meet up with your driver/guide and lunch on the waterfront. We take a guided tour of Pompalier House and printing press.

There's time to wander Russell's shops and historic buildings before we drive over to Long Bay for a glimpse of the beautiful outer Bay of Islands. Then we drive back to catch the vehicular ferry to Opua and return to Waitangi.

Day 6: Bay of Islands - Whangarei - Auckland

Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre - Northland Summertime Tour

At Kawakawa we check out the famous toilet block created by the artist Hundertwasser that has put this town on the map. We lunch in Whangarei and visit a very special place, the Native Bird Recovery Centre where we meet the talking tuis and see kiwis close-up.

We continue south down the highway with views out to the Whangarei Heads and over the Bryndrwyn Hills to  the small farming towns of Kaiwaka, Wellsford and Warkworth. We return to Auckland in the late afternoon. Thank you for choosing to travel with MoaTours.
