Day 1: Auckland - Waipoua Forest - Omapere

Hokianga Harbour - Northland Summertime Tour

Our first stop is Muriwai Beach to visit the gannet colony nesting on a headland. We continue up the West Coast and lunch in Matakohe where we visit the amazing Matakohe Kauri Museum. North of Dargaville we enter the beautiful Waipoua Forest guarded over by Tane Mahuta, the God of the Forest and the largest kauri. Tane Mahuta is just a short, flat walk through beautiful native bush.

We continue around the southern shores of the Hokianga to the small village of Omapere. Our hotel is on the water’s edge with wonderful views across to the golden sand dunes. Take a walk on the beach before we dine in at the hotel this evening.

Day 2: Omapere - Ahipara - Ninety Mile Beach - Mangonui - Waitangi

Hokianga Wharf - Northland Summertime Tour

This morning we drive to Opononi and on to the pretty village of Rawene where we catch the vehicular ferry for a short trip across the Hokianga to historic Kohukohu. We continue through the Northland countryside to Shipwreck Bay and Ahipara, a favourite destination for surfers at the southern end of Ninety Mile Beach.

We drive through Kaitaia and Awanui and cross the island to Cable Bay, Coopers Beach and Mangonui on the East Coast. We arrive at our hotel at Waitangi in the late afternoon. The sparkling blue waters of this maritime park are dotted with islands - it's a paradise for beach lovers and sailors. We dine in the hotel this evening.

Day 3: Bay of Islands cruise - Russell sightseeing (

Hole in the Rock - Northland Summertime Tour

Enjoy a scenic four hour dolphin-watching cruise on the Bay this morning. Step on board at Paihia to cruise out through the islands and golden sand beaches to Cape Brett and the famous Hole in the Rock.  Disembark at Russell to meet up with your driver/guide and lunch on the waterfront. We take a guided tour of Pompalier House and printing press.

There's time to wander Russell's shops and historic buildings before we drive over to Long Bay for a glimpse of the beautiful outer Bay of Islands. Then we drive back to catch the vehicular ferry to Opua and return to Waitangi.

Day 4: Bay of Islands - Kerikeri - Waimate Mission House

Waitangi Treaty House - Northland Summertime Tour

The Bay of Islands is known as the cradle of New Zealand. On the historic trail today we visit the Waitangi Treaty House where there are beautiful views of the Bay. Then we drive to Kerikeri, a thriving town known for its orchards and arts and crafts, there is time to enjoy all this town has to offer.

We call into the Stone Store and adjacent Kemp House built in 1820, New Zealand’s oldest European building. We continue to Waimate Mission House and arrive back at the Copthorne in time for a swim in the pool before dining in this evening.

Day 5: Bay of Islands - Whangarei - Auckland

Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre - Northland Summertime Tour

At Kawakawa we check out the famous toilet block created by the artist Hundertwasser that has put this town on the map. We lunch in Whangarei and visit a very special place, the Native Bird Recovery Centre where we meet the talking tuis and see kiwis close-up.

We continue south down the highway with views out to the Whangarei Heads and over the Bryndrwyn Hills to  the small farming towns of Kaiwaka, Wellsford and Warkwortth. We return to Auckland in the late afternoon. Thank you for choosing to travel with MoaTrek New Zealand Small Group Tours
