Day 1: Auckland - The Chateau Tongariro

Chateau Tongariro Hotel - World of Wearable Arts Tour

We depart Auckland this morning and drive into the heart of the Waikato dairy farmlands before stopping for lunch at a Te Kuiti Deer Farm with Karen and William Oliver.

The farming landscape becomes more rugged as we drive through the King Country to the country town of Taumarunui and on to National Park. We arrive at the Chateau Tongariro Hotel at Whakapapa village at the foot of Mt Ruapehu. There's time to relax and enjoy the alpine outlook before dining in this classic, landmark hotel this evening.

Day 2: The Chateau Tongariro - Wellington

Wellington Harbour - World of Wearable Arts Tour

We drive up the mountain road to the Top of the Bruce to enjoy the magnificent, snowy panorama, if the weather permits. Then we continue around the slopes of Mt Ruapehu to Ohakune, an attractive village popular with skiers, nestled on the edge of a beech forest and on to Taihape.

Further south we stop at our favourite cafe for lunch. We continue down the Kapiti Coast with views out to Kapiti Island bird sanctuary. Arriving in Wellington we check into your five star downtown hotel. We dine in the Bolton Hotel restaurant this evening.

Day 3: Wellington sightseeing - World of Wearable Arts Awards

Wearable Arts Costume - World of Wearable Arts Tour

Sit back and relax and enjoy sightseeing in the capital city. We visit Te Papa Museum, our national museum and lunch with Fee and David Weaver at the Pepped Warbeck garden. We tour to Oriental Bay and drive up Mt Victoria for the views of the city and harbour.

There's time to check out Wellington's shops including the David Jones department store. We dine at an acclaimed Wellington restaurant before attending the 8pm performance of the World of Wearable Art Awards. Enjoy a close up view of this spectacular two hour event from your premium seat.

Day 4: Wellington - Greytown - Napier

Gwavas Homestead - World of Wearable Arts Tour

We drive over the Rimutaka Ranges and on to Greytown where we browse the boutique shops, including the enticing Schoc chocolate shop, along the main street lined with charming Victorian-era buildings. Travelling north up the Wairarapa passing the small towns of Norsewood and Waipukurau.

Our private homestead lunch is at Gwavas, in Tikokino, Hawkes Bay with Phyllida and Stuart Gibson. Tour the historic homestead and hear their stories of 150 years of family history. Wander the trails of Gwavas' nine hectare woodland garden at its springtime best. We continue to Napier and dine in your hotel tonight.

Day 5: Hawkes Bay Sightseeing

Art Deco Arch - World of Wearable Arts Tour

This morning a specialist Art Deco guide boards our coach to tell us the stories of the 1931 earthquake and Napier's rebuild as we drive leisurely through the Art Deco suburbs and stop at the outstanding National Tobacco Company building. We drive through the Hawkes Bay landscape of orchards and vineyards, touring to Hastings and Havelock North, while driving the picturesque TukiTuki Road to Clive and Te Awanga. We dine in our hotel again this evening.

Day 6: Napier - Taupo - Auckland

Waipunga Falls - World of Wearable Arts Tour

We  leave Napier after breakfast, first winding up the narrow roads of Bluff Hill for the outstanding city and ocean views before driving over the ranges stopping at a lookout to view the spectacular Waipunga Falls.

Our farewell lunch is hosted by Tony and Susan Dalby at beautiful Wharewaka Lodge on the shores of Lake Taupo. There's time to relax and enjoy lunch and refreshments. In the afternoon we leave Taupo to drive back to Auckland through Cambridge and the Waikato arriving in the early evening.
