Day 1: Auckland - Thames - Coromandel

Butterfly Garden - Coromandel Seniors Tour

We depart Auckland and your Coromandel Caper begins as we travel east along Thames Highway to the magical Butterfly and Orchid Garden. We lunch at  the Trellis Tearoom at Rapaura Watergardens where you can wander among Rapaura’s beautiful 64 acres of native trees, lily ponds, bridges, streams and a cascading waterfall.

Travelling further north along this picturesque coastline, we arrive at historic Coromandel where the town’s gold mining past is still visible today, beautifully restored buildings line the main street. We dine at Pepper Tree Restaurant in Coromandel.

Day 2: Coromandel - Matarangi - Whitianga

Barry Brickells Railway - Coromandel Seniors Tour

Sit back as we explore the heart of the Peninsula. We visit Barry Brickell’s Driving Creek Railway and Potteries to ride the narrow gauge mountain railway train up through the bush to the pinnacle – the Eyefull Tower. This tower lives up to its name – the views are magnificent.

Leaving the West Coast we drive over the hills to visit the white sandy East Coast beach resorts of Matarangi and Kuaotunu. Our Whitianga accommodation is on the Buffalo beachfront and there's time to take a bathe at the Lost Spring Geothermal hot pools (optional) before we dine in town tonight.

Day 3: Whitianga - Hahei - Pauanui - Whangamata

Whangamata Harbour - Coromandel Seniors Tour

This morning we check out Whitianga before driving to Colenso cafe for morning tea. We visit the popular holiday spots of Hahei, Hot Water Beach (including the Moko Artspace Gallery), and Cook’s Beach where we lunch at Mercury Bay Estate vineyard.

Continuing south we visit more favourite Kiwi holiday spots - Tairua and Pauanui and stay in yet another holiday town, Whangamata. We dine at Argo restaurant near Whangamata’s famous surf beach.

Day 4: Whangamata - Waihi - Seabird Coast - Auckland

Cornish Pumphouse Waihi - Coromandel Seniors Tour

After breakfast we’re bound for Waihi's craft shops and the Martha Mine, just above the main street, where there is a clear view down to the open cast gold mine overlooked by the historic Cornish Pumphouse.

We continue through the dramatic Karangahake Gorge to lunch at Ohinemuri Estate vineyard. We drive along the Seabird Coast to visit the Miranda Shorebird Centre, a favourite place for birdwatchers, and on to Clevedon arriving back in Auckland around 5pm.
