Day 1: Auckland - Christchurch - Hanmer Springs

Art in a Garden - Canterbury Gardens Tour

Your included flight departs Auckland mid-morning. From Christchurch we drive north to the pretty alpine village of Hanmer Springs.

We stop for lunch at Penny Zino's Flaxmere Farm, Hawarden and visit the stunning "Art in a Garden" as they prepare to open their exhibition. This is an annual event where artists, sculptors, potters and jewellers exhibit in this beautiful location. Penny’s garden on terraced riverbed country is a seven acre Garden of National Significance, 45 years in the making. Later in the day we continue to Hanmer Springs and the Heritage hotel, our home for two nights.

Day 2: Hanmer - Waipara Country Fete - Hanmer

Waipara Country Fete - Canterbury Gardens Tour

Relax and enjoy this famous one day event – the Waipara Country Fete. There are over 200 stalls to browse, including fine arts and crafts, local wine and food. It's where South Islanders go to shop early for Christmas, not to mention a wonderful highlight on this New Zealand garden tour.

In the afternoon we return to Hanmer in plenty of time to enjoy a soak in the hot pools or check out Hanmer's boutique shops before dining this evening.

Day 3: Hanmer - Hurunui Gardens - Christchurch

After a leisurely start at Hanmer this morning we travel south down the Canterbury Plains to explore the farm gardens of the Hurunui - Coldstream, Saddlewood and Gola Peaks.

We also visit Ironbridge Sculpture Park before travelling on to Christchurch and the Chateau in the Park, right next to Hagley Park. Dinner is in the garden restaurant at the hotel tonight.

Day 4: Christchurch - Ashburton - Akaunui Homestead - Mt Somers

Akaunui Homestead - Canterbury Gardens Tour

We start the day with a visit to Robyn Kilty's inner city gardens, before heading south to say hi to our friends Bob and Marg Verrall at Winchmore Gardens.

Nearby at Akaunui, we join our hosts Ian and Di Mackenzie for lunch in their 100 year old farm homestead set in magnificent gardens. Most of the items on the menu will have been grown in Di's bountiful garden. We arrive in Mt Somers in the late afternoon. Sean and Madeline Brown host us at Stronechrubie this evening. Sean is an outstanding chef and high country cuisine will be on the menu.

Day 5: Mt Somers - Mid Canterbury farm gardens

Old Schoolhouse Garden - Canterbury Gardens Tour

Driving into the Mt Somers countryside to visit farm gardens in the foothills of the Southern Alps. We visit Sara and Blair Gallagher’s garden at Rangiatea sheep and cattle farm, their jewellery shop and gallery display of agate rock found on the property.

We lunch with Frances and Don Stanton in their sweet 1878 schoolhouse near Mt Somers surrounded by a picturesque cottage garden. Then at the end of the day we visit Sara Grigg's magnificent garden at Surrey Hills Station. We dine at Stronechrubie this evening.

Day 6: Mt Somers - Akaroa

Akaroa Waterfront - Canterbury Gardens Tour

This morning we leave the Canterbury Plains for the expansive views from the top of Banks Peninsula. We lunch in Akaroa with John and Lesley at Blythcliffe built in 1857, the expansive garden reflects its colonial history.

In Akaroa your Bruce Apartments are along the harbour’s edge. Akaroa is a pretty village known for its historic houses, some tracing their origins back to the early French settlers. There’s free time to explore the town before dining out this evening.

Day 7: Akaroa - Fisherman's Bay - Bank's Peninsula touring

Giants House - Canterbury Gardens Tour

After a leisurely breakfast in Akaroa we set off for some local touring of the Banks Peninsula. We visit Jos & Stew Howden’s Potter’s Croft garden and The Giant’s House, artist Josie Martin’s amazing garden and gallery featuring her sculptural mosaics and paintings. 

Then we drive to Fisherman’s Bay where along a dramatic clifftop Richard and Jill Simpson have created a stunning garden with a variety of planting themes. We have a private lunch with the Simpsons and explore the garden in a relaxed manner. In the afternoon we sightsee on the way back into town.

Day 8: Akaroa - Christchurch - Auckland

Ohinetahi Homestead and Garden - MoaTours

We visit Jendy and Pat Brooks’ garden at French Farm for morning tea. We call into Barry’s Bay Traditional Cheese shop before returning over the hill to lunch at Little River before making our way over the hill to Governor's Bay for morning tea at Miles Warren's superb Ohinetahi, a garden of international significance.
